Trust in the Lord-Not Your Own Understanding

The center scripture in the Bible is Psalms 118:8 “It is better to trust in the Lord than to put confidence in man.” KJV. An appropriate centerpiece for the Bible.

Trust is the word for our church this year.  Trust is an ongoing struggle for me and maybe for many of us.  All too often I believe I know what is best for me.  One of my favorite scriptures is Proverbs 3:5 NLT “Trust in the Lord and lean not on your own understanding”

Trusting in our own understanding means we are trying to figure out a problem so we can feel we are in control of our lives.  Do we really trust ourselves to control our own lives?  This is certainly not what God wants from us.  So often our understanding of a situation or problem is totally clouded by our own needs and issues in our life.

There are so many situations where trust is difficult.  Many have been getting ill with Covid-19 who totally believed it would never happen to them.  How do you understand what you believed God had told you?  Only by trusting that God is in control and He knows what is best for us.  I think sometimes a situation is allowed to test if we trust God to work His will in our life.

Illness, death, tragedy are just some circumstances that make trusting difficult.  Psalms 56:3 “But when I am afraid I will put my trust in you.”  Our trust is dependent on who we believe God is.  Is He sovereign? (God has absolute right to do all things according to His own good pleasure – Easton’s Bible Dictionary)  Jeremiah 32:17 NLT “O Sovereign Lord!  You made the heavens and earth by your strong hand and powerful arm.  Nothing is too hard for you!”

My challenge is to seek the Lord every day and trust the direction He leads me.  If I believe He is sovereign than I have to believe He knows what is best for me and will direct me.

As we place our trust in the Lord, He will meet our every need.

“Commit everything to the Lord.  Trust Him, and He will help you.” Psalms 37:5

“O my people, trust in Him at all times.  Pour out your heart to Him, for God is our refuge.”        Psalms 62:8

“Don’t let your hearts be troubled.  Trust in God, and trust also in me.”  John 14:1
