Renewing Our Mind

How do we take our thoughts captive and renew our mind?  2 Corinthians  10:4.5  NKJV “For the weapons of our warfare are not carnal but mighty in God for pulling down strongholds, (5) casting down arguments and every high thing that exalts itself against the knowledge of God, bringing every thought into captivity to the obedience of Christ”.  Romans 12:2 NKJV “And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God.”

These two scriptures go hand in hand for me.

We can think thoughts that are not pleasing to God.  We can be negative and without hope.  We could be involved in a sinful activity.  Our joy in the Lord might be lacking.

Strongs #5218 defines obedience as attentive hearing, to listen with compliant submission, assent and agreement.

There are steps we can take to change our patterns of  thinking and bring our thoughts into obedience to Christ.

We can read scripture.  Hebrews 4:12 NKJV “For the word of God is living and powerful, and sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing even to the division of soul and spirit, and of joints and marrow, and a discerner of the thought and intents of the heart.”  The Word of God gives clear directions on how to think, act and live our life Colossians 3;16 NKJV “Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly in all wisdom, teaching and admonishing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with grace in your hearts to the Lord.”

We can pray: Jeremiah 29:12 “Then you will call upon me and go and pray to Me, and I will listen to you”  Ask Jesus to renew your mind.  He is faithful to answer.

Praise:  Psalms 149:1 “Praise the Lord!  Sing to the Lord a new song, and His praise in the assembly of saints.” Listening to praise and worship music can bring my mind back to Jesus and take my negative  thoughts captive.   I can sing a new song to the Lord.  My mind can concentrate on joyful thoughts and I can take captive every thought to make it obedient to Christ and renew my mind.

Taking our thoughts captive and allowing God to renew our mind is a continual process.

Jesus instructed us in Matthew 7:7,8 to “Ask, and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you.  (8)For everyone who asks receives, and he who seeks finds, and to him who knocks it will be opened.”

As we ask, seek and knock, let’s remember “God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind.”  2 Timothy 1:7
