God's Wisdom

In the Bible, the Book of James is a book of practical religion.  It is attributed to being written by Jesus’ brother, James.  According to the preface in my Spirit Filled Bible, edited by Jack Hayford, James’s purpose is “primarily practical and ethical, emphasizing duty, rather that doctrine.  His two fundamental emphasis are personal growth in the spiritual life and sensitivity in social relationships.”

I love practical advice in scripture.  I am not a Bible scholar or theologian.  I need scripture to be interpreted in a way I can understand, and apply to my daily life.

One scripture in James I especially like is James 1:5 NKJV “If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all liberally and without reproach, and it will be given to him.”  Reproach (in Strong’s Concordance #3679) has several definitions.  It has come to denote mocking, ridiculing, scolding, insulting and using words angrily or sarcastically.  James 1:5 assures us that God gives without reminding us of our unworthiness.  Wow! We are worthy to receive His wisdom!

James 1:6a “But let him ask in faith, with no doubting….”  When we ask for wisdom in faith, we are asking for spiritual understanding, not intellectual knowledge.

God will grant us wisdom when we don’t know what to do.  He always knows the best answer for us.  James 3:17 NLT “But the wisdom from above is first of all pure.  It is also peace loving, gentle at all times, and willing to yield to others.  It is full of mercy and the fruit of good deeds.  It shows no favoritism and is always sincere.”

Proverbs 4:7 CEB “The beginning of wisdom:  Get wisdom!  Get understanding before anything else.”

According to the Bible concordance, there are 222 scriptures about wisdom.  I WANT and I NEED the wisdom that comes from the word of God.  We can seek Godly counsel but ultimately, only God can give us spiritual wisdom and understanding so we can live our lives as He desires for us.

“If you are wise and understand God’s ways, prove it by living an honorable life, doing good works with the humility that comes from wisdom.”  James 3:13 NLT

Stay well, Stay safe,
